Learn why bloating happens at summer parties and discover five simple, Ayurveda-informed tips to ease discomfort so you can enjoy cookouts without the aftermath.
Summer parties shouldn’t leave you feeling miserable.
Cookouts, picnics, and outdoor gatherings are meant to be fun, but many people leave feeling bloated, sluggish, and uncomfortable. Understanding why bloating happens at summer parties can help you enjoy these moments without the discomfort later.
Here are five reasons we get bloated at cookouts- and simple tips to help you feel your best.
1) Dehydration Before Meals
In the summer months, your blood stays closer to the surface of your skin to keep you cool, which means your digestion can be a bit weaker, and your appetite might be lower.
Without enough hydration, your body struggles to produce the digestive enzymes needed to break down your meal, leaving you bloated and heavy.
Tip: Stay hydrated throughout the day, and drink a small glass of water about 30 minutes before your meal to prime your digestive fire (known as Agni in Ayurveda).
2) Eating Too Many Different Foods at Once
At parties, it’s tempting to grab “a little bit of everything.” But every ingredient you eat requires specific digestive processes. The more variety you pile onto your plate, the more complex it is for your body to break it all down efficiently.
Tip: Keep it simple. Choose 3–5 foods you truly want, and skip the endless sampling to ease your digestion and reduce bloating.
3) Carbonated Drinks (and Swallowing Air)
Sodas, seltzers, and beer are common party drinks, but carbonation introduces extra air into your digestive system, which can leave you feeling puffy. Pair that with rushed eating and not chewing your food well, and you’re swallowing even more air.
Tip: Opt for still beverages, and take your time chewing each bite to reduce unnecessary air intake.
4) Food Combinations That Cause Fermentation
We’re not talking about healthy fermentation like sauerkraut here, but the undesirable kind that happens inside your digestive tract when fast-digesting foods (like fruit, especially melon) mix with slower-digesting foods (like cheeseburgers).
This mix can cause bacteria in your gut to ferment the food, creating gas and bloating.
Tip: If you’re going to eat fruit at a cookout, have it first and wait at least 30 minutes before eating anything else. Fruit is wonderfully hydrating, but mixing it with heavier foods may lead to awkward moments later.
5) Overeating
It’s easy to overeat when there’s an abundance of delicious food around. But overeating leads to immediate bloating, and leading to sluggishness, and inflammation later- none of which help you enjoy your day.
Tip: Tune into your body and stop eating when you feel satisfied, not stuffed. Savor each bite, enjoy the flavors, and know you can always come back for more later if you’re truly hungry.
