Summer brings longer days, brighter skies, and a fuller calendar. But if you’ve noticed yourself feeling more impatient, inflamed, or mentally “fried,” you’re not alone. Learn how Seasonal Regulation can help you recognize what’s showing up and respond with the support your body is asking for.
Nature is always changing and so are we. Each season brings different gifts, different challenges, and different opportunities to better understand ourselves. That’s what seasonal regulation is all about, it's a zoomed out version of homeostasis.
It is the practice of recognizing how the changing seasons influence your body, your mind, and your energy, then responding with the support that helps you thrive.
One of the most common questions I ask clients isn’t, “What’s wrong?” It’s much simpler- “What’s showing up?”
Because our bodies are always communicating with us via our energy level, the state of our digestion, level of pain, or any host of other symptoms. The seasons can impact these things for better or worse depending on our constitutions.
If we pay attention, we can make choices that better support living in personal harmony, or weathering a storm. Today, we’re talking about one of the most dynamic seasons of the year.
Summer
and the shifts that come with it. Most notably the longer days.
But your calendar has quietly filled with vacations, family gatherings, cookouts, beach days, concerts, weddings, and evenings spent outside.
Life feels expansive. Plants are growing.
After months of winter hibernation and the energetic momentum of spring, we’re ready to get out into the world again.
We’re naturally saying “yes” more often.
More sunshine= more people, more movement, more experiences and what seems like more life.
But sometimes in the middle of all that goodness, something else often begins showing up.
Redness & Irritation
This sign that can show up on your tongue, eyes, joints, and skin.
It might also show up as:
- less patience and more reactivity, and increase criticalness.
- You find yourself getting heartburn, or your digestion feeling a little off.
- You catch yourself feeling mentally fried even though you’re doing things you genuinely enjoy.
Maybe you’ve even thought, “Why am I feeling this way? Summer is so fun.”
The Weather Outside & The Weather Inside
One of the things I love most about seasonal living is that nature is constantly offering us clues. Solstice is the height of summer, and just as the sun warms the earth that heat is accumulating in all the layers of our being too.
As the pace outside accelerates…our nervous systems may begin carrying that same momentum internally.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, summer is associated with qualities of heat, sharpness, intensity, and transformation.
You don’t need to know anything about Ayurveda to recognize those qualities that show up when you've simply been “running hot” for a too long. Even thooooo--- for some of you (that run cold) you'll actually feel better the warm times of year.
It's how they show up- find out, what season are you?
When you know which seasons naturally support you and which seasons ask for a little more intention, life becomes much simpler- and you don't feel like you are swimming upstream all the time.
Instead of trying to do everything perfectly all the time, you begin responding to what’s actually showing up. Regulation begins with recognition.
Working With the Summer Shift
Once you’ve recognized what’s showing up, the next question becomes:
What does my body need more of right now?
and/or
What might it need a little less of?
Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference.
Cool the Fire
When our internal environment begins feeling hot, irritated, or overstimulated, I start looking for ways to invite in the opposite qualities.
Not because heat is bad. Heat is what ripens tomatoes, grows gardens, and fuels adventure. Plus it supports all of the transformations in our body, right down to the cell.
Another interesting thing about summer, at least here on the mid-atlantic, is that the first half of summer is exceptionally muggy, humid and essentially damp (more Kapha). The second half is dry and we are always at risk of drought (more Vata). So depending on which way you lean, will determine how you are impacted as well.
A few simple swaps
One of my favorite places to begin balancing pitta is with herbs. Like replacing the pumpkin spice with mint, lavender or others that are ripe this time of year, and also have supportive qualities.
Mint can be found in teas, added to salads, made into jellies, found in shampoos, cleaning products and so much more.
Have you ever noticed how instinctively we reach for mint in the summer? It is refreshing, inspiring, and can bring relief from migraines to clearing stagnation. It's great for the person who is damp hot. Nature gives us exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.
Lavender: The Invitation to Exhale
Lavender does wonders for in-"flame"-ation, stress, and reducing pain. It relaxes the muscles and the business of the mind- which allows for better sleep. It is used as a culinary herb, but probably best know for it's spa like uses in candles, bath products, eye pillows and more.
It has a remarkable way of signaling that it’s time to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and release the tension you’ve been carrying.
That’s one of the reasons I paired lavender and mint together in the Soothe Ritual Collection.
Constructive Rest
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that many of the people I work with are exceptionally good at taking care of everyone else. They’re caregivers, professionals, parents, teachers, business owners and people who naturally keep life moving.
Rest doesn’t always come naturally and often feels…unproductive.
That’s one of the reasons I love Reiki during the summer and think of it as constructive rest. You’re intentionally creating space to receive instead of produce, to listen instead of solve, and to restore rather than push.
You allow your body to remember what it feels like to settle. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is stop trying so hard for a little while, reduce stimulation, and downshift out of overdrive.
Less asking our bodies to constantly adapt. That doesn’t mean saying no to every summer invitation. It simply means noticing when your body is asking for a quieter rhythm.
This is one of the reasons I often return to simple, seasonal meals, because I feel more aligned, harmonized, and my body doesn't have to try SO hard. It doesn't feel restrictive, it feels easier, because it's just more simple.
This is exactly why I created my free 3-Day Detox. For when you just need to take it easy for a meal, a day, a few or longer. When you need something that is both efficient and effective.
Despite the name, it isn’t about deprivation. It's giving your digestive system a brief opportunity to catch its breath while nourishing it with whole, seasonal foods that support your body instead of asking more from it.
And if your feeling irritated, inflamed, burnt out, having diarrhea, reflux or burning sensations anywhere in your body- you might want to give it a try.
This applies to movement too
During the hottest months of the year, you may find yourself feeling better with an early morning walk instead of a midday run.
A restorative yoga class instead of a hot vinyasa (or at least moderating).
This 20 minute yoga class. might be just what your body is asking for.
Or just asking yourself, “What would feel supportive today?”
Creating Your Own Summer Ritual
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate over the years is that our nervous systems respond to consistency. Little choices that make s difference in the moment, but also add up over time.
- Lighting a candle.
- Running a bath.
- Making a cup of mint tea.
- Listening to a meditation.
- Practicing a few quiet breaths.
None of these things are particularly complicated on their own, and can easily become a ritual that your body recognizes as, “We’re shifting gears now.” That's what the Soothe Ritual Collection was designed for...and all of the meditations that go along with it.
Continue the Conversation
The beautiful thing about seasonal regulation is that while we all move through the same seasons, we don’t all experience them in the same way.
There are patterns. Summer naturally brings more warmth, more activity, more light, and more outward energy. We all experience those qualities to some degree collectively, but have a unique individual experience.
This is why finding out, "which season are you?" can be extraordinarily helpful.
Not to put you in a box, but o help you recognize your patterns.
When you understand your season of life, you can begin supporting yourself in the ways that matter most.
If today’s conversation resonated with you, here are a few gentle places to continue exploring:
- Take the What Season Are You? Quiz to better understand how your unique body responds throughout the year.
- If your not ready for the yoga practice I linked above, explore my Nadi Shodhana article for another calming practice.

- Not sure where to start, just reach out, I'd love to help you figure out where is the best place to start.
It's doesn't have to be summer on the outside to feel like it on the inside. Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject in the comments.
